Maybe you’re hesitant to spend money on something that you've been told is relatively trivial, especially when it seems like you could easily do it yourself. If you’re new to how branding works, or even just new to running a business, then it’s safe to assume that you’re not really sure just how powerful branding can be when it’s done right. How about the fact that your new business is the culmination of hard work, sleepless nights and every other sacrifice you’ve had to make to get it running. Letting go of a part of it and handing that to someone who doesn’t know anything about your dream can be quite overwhelming.
So, this question is actually answered more thoroughly in the two free videos, but watching a video isn’t always convenient, so hopefully this will give you enough infomration until you're able to sit down and watch them.
Every person that you know has a personality and an identity, right? A brand is the same thing, but for businesses. It’s all about the impressions, interactions, and memories that you have with that business. Just like how a person’s appearance, behavior, and reputation helps you to decide whether or not you want to interact with them, and on what level, a business’s brand should create the same feelings. This is called “creating a connection.”
The brand isn’t just important, it’s the most important part of your business. That’s because it should do all of the marketing work for you. It’s the brand that people will remember. It’s the brand that people will interact with. It’s the brand that people are talking about, sharing, and referring. It's the brand that people are buying.
The first thing that you need to do is something, anything, that will grab attention. That can be with a heartwarming story, something unique, a fun slogan, or even just bright colors. Anything that makes people stop what they are doing and take notice, even if it’s just for an instant. Once you’ve done that then you’ve created the initial connection that the rest of your client/customer interactions will be based on. From there you’ll use images, stories, and more interactions to strengthen that connection, and even create some new ones.
The big deal is that logos are the face of your business. When you’re in a crowded room and are looking for someone familiar you’re not going up to each person and asking their name. You’re looking at their face. So, when you’re digging through a pile of business cards, or Googling the company you just found out about, you’re not looking for the name either… you’re looking for their logo. That’s the same way your customers are looking for you. If your logo doesn’t jump out and grab people then how will they find you? That connection you made is lost.
There are times when it is the only way that you have to communicate with potential customers. For Example, how many times have you walked into a store based solely on the sign over the door? Your logo will serve many purposes, and you want to make sure it can do them all properly.
They are not obsolete. They are one of the most widely used marketing materials. The problem is that people don’t understand how to use them properly and so they are often overlooked. A business card is a very easy way for people to have a distinct memory of you and your business. The design of the card is a good portion of its power. By having a design that demands attention, something that makes the recipient stop and put all of their focus on your card, you create a connection. However, if that design is ineffective then the delivery falls short.

The real question is… can you do really it yourself for free? Let’s say you’re an expert in all things branding. You’ve had years of graphic design classes, you’re an expert photographer, a social media guru, and are a master at building websites. You truly know everything thing there is to know. How many hours do you want to take away from your business to prepare all of these materials? How much money is lost because you’re distracted?
Now, let’s look at reality. You’re probably not an expert in any of those things. So, you’re going to struggle for days trying to learn how to create all of the things that you'll need, without ever knowing if they actually work. How many hours of an already overloaded day are actually lost? To save time you’ll get a cheap logo and marketing materials that have no message or impact, and so they'll be ignored by the customers you're trying to reach. How much money will they generate then? All of the time and expertise that you could be dedicating to your business will be wasted trying to figure out how graphic design, page layout, photography, HTML and CSS, SEO and whatever else you need work together?
Hopefully, this has answered all of your questions and left you ready to get to work on the greatest brand the world has ever seen, but if you still have questions then please feel free to reach out with whatever else you need help with.
